Math - Three Addends

As the 3rd nine weeks come to an end, we are spending our time reviewing standards before the 3rd nine weeks test.  I created a roll 3 game to practice adding 3 numbers.  Students love DICE GAMES and writing on the desks were a bonus!  I think they have "finding a double" and "making a ten" down pat.

Math Review = Fun!

Today was review day for math. I had a two sweet moms and a lovely grandmother come in today to help with math centers. It was great because I was able to put students in groups of 4 to better meet their needs.

Center 1:   Shake those Beans from Made for 1st Grade to explore Ways to Make a Number.

Center 2:  Smore Fun from First Grade and Fabulous.

I used this center to have students write addition sentenced.

 They added marshmallows + graham crackers.

 Center 4:  Having a Hoot with Tens Frames also created by me.  Get your copy here.  This set contains multiple games.  Today, students worked on "Making a 10."

Center 5:  Dice Addition:  Easy enough.  Students roll 2 dice & write the addition sentence that goes with it.

 Center 6:  I worked on understanding the equal signs with my students in small groups.  It has been a tough concept for them this week.  So, first we worked on problems paper pencil style & then I showed them how to play "Equal Signs Bug Me!"

Fall is my favorite time of the year!  I love the cool weather and the chance to bundle up in my favorite pair of blue jeans and sweatshirt.  The colors on the trees are absolutely amazing - a beautiful reminder of WHO is really in control in this crazy world.

Common Core 1.NBT.1 - Freebies

This is my second year using the Common Core Standards.  I like the new standards, but as a first grade team we were always searching and pulling for activities.  Our math book, which I didn't like even with the old State Standards, only covers SOME of the standards.  Most of the time we were creating our own activities.  Over the summer, each teacher on the team was given a few standards to focus on.  

Here are 4 activities for Common Core 1.NBT.1.  

One uses dice and the other playing cards.  There are 2 versions of each to provide for differentiation.

Common Core Math Workstation & Must Have Picture Books Linky

I am breaking an unwritten blogger rule about posting twice in one day, BUT I feel soooo far behind from being on vacation & feel like I missed out on a ton!  

I went in to work for a little bit before vacation to start organizing my math workstations.  I decided to store them in tubs ice cube buckets like my kiddos store their reading books in (see here).

Before, I was storing them in baggies in my filing cabinet behind each Common Core Standard File Folder.  It just wasn't working!

Once I organized them, I realized I was short a variety of activities for certain standards and had lots for others, like place value.  So, either I could start searching TPT or create some of my own.

Here is a game I created for practice with adding 3 numbers.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this linky.  My LOVE for Children's Literature began as a child.  I was an avid reader!

My OBSESSION with collecting children's books began during my Children's Literature Class in college - Thank you Dr. Cates!  I remember crying in class when she read, I'll Love You Forever.

Later, I purchased that book for my mom for Mother's Day & years later sang the song to my beautiful children.  The power of books is amazing!  The amount of money I have in books is STAGGERING. I could possibly retire if I sold them all for full price.  With so many books and so many memories, how could I just pick a few?  I decided I would pick a one book for several different categories.

• Math book - Time

• Science

Gail Gibbons books are amazing & I use them not 
only in science, but also in teaching 
non fiction text features.

• Beginning of School

Chrysanthemum is one of my beginning of the year books 
used to teach about our classroom community.  We talk
 about how not to hurt each other's feelings and how 
to get along.  I have a few super cute activities I use 
with this book which  I will share @ the beginning of 
school.  
I also use this at that time during math, where we look 
at the length of each other's names and do graphing & 
counting activities.

• Writing Features

One of my favorite Writer's Workshop Units is teaching 

Writer's Craft.  I begin this unit with Lester 

Laminack's, Saturdays and Teacakes, 

but follow it up with lots of other books.  

The Recess Queen provides many examples like:

stacked words

bold words

sound words

ellipses

repeated phrases

Not to mention, this is a great book to talk about being 

the new kid in class or bullying!

• Just to Read Aloud

The message in this book is heart warming.  

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge likes to spend 
time at the nursing home next door.  He likes all 
the older people, but he especially likes 
Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper because 
she also has 4 names.  When he finds out she is losing 
her memory, he does his best to help her get her 
memory back.

• Word Work

Twenty-six Princesses is a great book to use for 

Rounding Up the Rhymes 

where you look at, study, and use rhyming pairs 

to help you read & write other rhyming pairs.

• Fairytales

One of my favorite times of the year is when we learn ...

 "What are Fairytales."

I love to compare and contrast different versions of favorite fairytale. Petite Rouge is a spin off of Little Red Riding Hood
 and is a MUST HAVE! 

It is creative and funny, 
especially if you hear me trying to read this

 with a Cajun accent!

• Vocabulary

Fancy Nancy always uses Fancy words which are often perfect for 

stretching the vocabulary of our young readers and writers.

Add It Up - Common Core 1.OA.2 & Freebie

I created this fun packet to go along with Common Core Standard 1.OA.2 - Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20.


Your students will enjoy solving problems with familiar fairy tale characters and other cute clipart.  I wanted students to solve the problems in various ways: drawing a picture, using tens frames, and using a number line.

Two New Common Core Math Work Stations

The "bug" themed Math Workstations I created for my classroom and then placed on TPT have been such a success, I decided to create 2 more. These two Math Workstations deal with 1.OA.8 - solving missing numbers in subtraction and addition equations.

I am lucky to have a wonderful student teacher this spring. She took on the full load last week which has given me more time to formally observe other teachers, remediate, plan for a workshop this Friday on "Text Complexity and the New Reading", and work on organizing my math files to reflect the new Common Core Standards. I am also trying to create materials to share with my grade level. Tonight, I was working on review activities for 1.NBT.5. Here is a freebie I would like to share.

Comparing Numbers Math Workstation

I just uploaded a new workstation to Teachers Pay Teachers. My students will be doing this activity with a partner while I am working with small groups. I created this activity so students could practice Common Core Standard 1.NBT.3.

Thanks to Kelly Brown, I stumbled upon a site I have been wishing for called 1st Grade CCSS Links.

It was created in July and has over 100 followers. The site is devoted to first grade teachers who are teaching the common core. If you are like me and new to common core, you need all the help you can get. Share the love and lighten another teacher's load by uploading a free lesson plan or idea to the site. I am currently working on a NBTS lesson and will upload it soon for FREE!

Math Games with a Bug Theme

Teachers Pay Teachers has become an obsession. Just ask my wallet! So, I decided to give it a try myself. It's also another excuse for me to play on my Mac. I created 2 games which review Common Core Standards my kiddos have been working on the second nine weeks. I plan to use the games in my math workstations the next go round.
