You Read to Me, I'll Read to You - Fluency

This week during Daily 5, I have been working with pairs of students on reading fluency.  The series of books You Read to Me, I'll Read to You are perfect for this skill.  My kiddos were having fun and practicing reading at the same time!  Once the first two students performed for the class, everyone was asking BEGGING for their turn to read!
These books contain rhythm, rhyme, and repetition that makes reading fun.  Performing them in front of the class with a friend is a bonus.  The pages are color coded for two readers.  One child might read the pink words.  The other child the blue.  When the words are orange and in the middle, they read together!
Here are a few of the books:

Add It Up - Common Core 1.OA.2 & Freebie

I created this fun packet to go along with Common Core Standard 1.OA.2 - Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20.

Your students will enjoy solving problems with familiar fairy tale characters and other cute clipart.  I wanted students to solve the problems in various ways: drawing a picture, using tens frames, and using a number line.
Just click on the above image to go to my TPT store to pick up your copy.

FREEBIE - The first 2 followers to comment will receive this unit for free.  Include your email in the comment.

Top 10 Pins of the Year Linky Party

I am joining Rachel over at Views from Room 205 for a Top Ten Pins of the Year Linky Party.   How can I only pick 10?

Having students create replicas of stores and other landmarks in our community seems like a lot of fun.

I get a kick out of reading first grade writing and can't believe how much many of them grow as writers in just a year's time.  Here is a cute and useful display to use in your classroom.  It is on my Summer To Do List!

I love the creative way Mrs. Nichols displays her class rules.
Cute and Crafty.
Cute and Crafty again!?  Is this becoming a theme?
When I saw these I had to make one for my student teacher.  She loved it!  Would it be silly to make myself one?
This quote summed up how I feel about my marriage of 20 years.  In October, we renewed our vows and included our children in the ceremony.  It was so much more special than even the first!
I hope to talk my hubby into making something like this over the summer.
What teacher doesn't love Dr Seuss?   I loved him as a little kid & may love him even more as a BIG kid.  I have to make these trees next year.
Any time I can miss eating and learning together, I am a happy teacher.
Why couldn't I make one of these for the classroom?  It could be a reading bench during Daily 5 & serve as a filing cabinet also.
And I am sure my kiddos would like Mrs. Pippen's take on using their "writer's eyes" to cheek their work.
Hope you found something you can't wait to pin!

My Summer Bucket List

Hadar, Teri, and April are hosting a Summer Bucket List Linky and I have joined in.
Only 18 more days of school left for me!

1.  Go to the Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw concert in Charlotte.

2.  Buy 2+ tickets to the Dallas Cowboy vs. Carolina Panther game in October.

3.  Spend 1 week in Myrtle Beach, SC with my immediate family& 2 extra kiddos.  Meet my best friend since 3rd grade and her family!

4.  SCRAPBOOK, SCRAPBOOK, SCRAPBOOK!   As well as, attend the Creating Keepsakes Convention in August.

5.  Soak up as much Mommy/Daughter time as possible before Kaitlyn moves into her first apartment in August.  What an adjustment it is watching her slowly move into adulthood and own her own.  I should be so happy for her {I am}, but my heart is broken that this summer may be her last at home.

Poetry

During my poetry unit, I found a post about book spine poetry by Maxey's over @ The Loco Teacher. I was intrigued and knew I had to try it. I went into the library the next day and checked out books, books, books, and MORE books. Books that spoke to me or were funny. Not necessarily books we had read in class already.

The next day, I displayed the books ALL over the classroom. Together, we took a book walk. We read all the titles of the books and looked at the covers. After the walk, I modeled how to pick 3 books that were related in some way (theme, etc). I switched around the books several times to see how I liked them best, sharing my thinking out loud.

{no picture of my example}

Here are a few of my favorites:

Don't make me laugh
Giggle, giggle quack
The dumb bunnies

The best part of me
Dog breath
For sure, for sure!

A good day
For sure, for sure
I didn't do it!

Giggle, giggle, quack
Toot, toot
I like the way you are!

In the blink of an eye
There is a town
The junkyard wonders!
